social studies is to prepare students to be productive, rational, participating
citizens
in a democratic society.
Sunshine State
Standards:
A. Time, Continuity,
and Change (History)
- The student understands historical
chronology and the historical perspective.
- The student understands
the world from its beginnings to the time of the Renaissance.
- The student understands Western
and Eastern civilization since the Renaissance.
- The student understands U.S.
history to 1880.
- The student understands U.S.
history from 1880 to the present day.
- The student understands the history
of Florida and its people.
B. People, Places, and Environments
(Geography)
- The student understands the world
in spatial terms.
- The student understands the interactions
of people and the physical environment.
C. Government
and the Citizen (Civics and Government)
- The student understands the structure,
functions, and purposes of government and how the principles and values
of American democracy are reflected in American constitutional government.
- The student understands the role
of the citizin in American democracy.
D. Production, Distribution,
and Consumption (Economics)
- The student understands how scarcity
requires individuals and institutions to make choices about how to use
available resources.
- The student understands the characteristics
of different economic systems and institutions.
Special Notes:
To meet Florida graduation requirement, students must earn three social studies
credits at the average, honors, advanced placement, or dual enrollment
level in the following courses:
- World History (1credit)
- American History (1 credit)
- Economics (1/2 credit)
- American Government (1/2
credit)
In addition, the School
District of Escambia County requires one-half credit of world geography.
Elective Courses:
In addition to courses required fro social studies credit, the social studies
includes elective courses.
